The pressure of work

by on March 26, 2016

leeksBesides getting the ground ready, it’s the time of the year when seeds need to go into trays in the poly tunnel ready to bring on for planting out.

The work shares and volunteers will have their hands full at the moment with sowing brassicas of all sorts as well as radish, lettuce, Chinese leaf and Chinese cabbage, leeks …

Already there are leeks in pots out in the cold frame hardening off and growing on for the first planting out. This year there is going to be successional sowing of leeks – Stamford, Musselburgh, Oarsman and then Northern Lights late leeks so that there is a longer season  for the leek supply.

But first things first, this week the urgent planting is of broad beans, onions and potatoes.  Yes, yes there are some broad beans coming on in one of the poly tunnels but this is all about successional sowing so the work shares have more to do!

Oh and seed beds need to be prepared for turnips and beetroot outside, possibly with clear plastic (though black would do) to warm the soil up for a week before planting.

Did we say that it’s the spring rush at the moment then?
