The annual Go Local Food scarecrow event will take place on the last Saturday of March – 25 March 2017. The idea is that scarecrows will be used to scare away the birds who want to eat the new plants that are growing. Liz Beech, our volunteer coordinator, will also be showing all the children who come along how to make mini scarecrows to take home.
Stephanie Moore ( Project developer) is contacting schools , as in the past, asking them to create and bring along scarecrows to the fields.
Liz thinks that we might also try to revive the some of the old scarecrows. She’s looking for mainly gloves, scarves and hats, maybe shoes or baggy trousers. And pieces of old fabric for the mini scarecrows would also be good. Liz would be happy if members have any of these items and could bring them to the field when collecting their crop share between now and and the day!
We will also have visiting us Mandy Oliver from the North Pennines AONB. Mandy will be promoting bees, the job they do, also the plight they are in and how we can help them. Maxine from Halls of Heddon will have nectar plants for sale so that people will have the opportunity to buy these to take home to encourage bees in their gardens.
