Can you grow peaches and figs outdoors in Northumberland? One of the many questions that challenged our panel at this years Go Local Food Growers Question Time.
The very knowledgeable panel of Tom Martin – Wylam Nurseries, Kate Norris – Battlesteads Hotel, Mark Lamb – Newcastle City Council and our very own grower Ian Todd tackled questions from spinach to strawberries, borders to greenhouses, tomatoes to fruit trees.
It was a great evening’s entertainment with fab food, finishing with the Chilli Challenge. Every participant went home with a chilli pepper plant and an invitation to join to grow the most impressive chilli. Judging will take place at the Apple Pressing and Chilli Day on Sunday 24th September at the Go Local Food fields in Ovington. If you are growing chilli peppers you may want to take part in the challenge as it’s open to everyone.
Oh yes, and you can grow peaches and figs outdoors – of course with the right conditions. We are looking forward to more discussion of all things that grow (and some that don’t!) next year.
