Last Thursday there was the first test of Go Local Food’s new potato lifter. It was a success – at least for the larger potatoes and left the soil in a good state for future working over. The work shares will have to fork over the cleared area to remove the weeds and see what the machine has missed in the way of potatoes. That will be the final test.
It will be important to see what is left and to remove all those left overs. The space cleared will be the new onion bed for next year and we really don’t want to be growing potatoes in among the onions as this could be detrimental to the newer crop.
Of course it will also tell us about the size we would like our potatoes to be when we come to lift them. We aren’t sure though that this is something we can dictate.
