The winding down of the summer crops continues on the Go Local Food fields. The indoor courgettes are now all removed and the outdoor ones are doing not a lot so it could be nearly the end of the courgette in the crop shares.
The cucumbers are all over for the season so the beds have been cleared. This means that the beds in the poly tunnels are now being prepared for winter crops such as chard and spinach. A sowing of beetroot or radish is also being considered.
The first 400 of the onion sets are planted – indoors to allow them to get roots down and growth on before going outside to face the dangers of pigeons getting under the environmesh and pulling them up (that’s a favourite game with pigeons).
The borlotti beans have been taken down so that the space can be prepared and filled with early spring brassicas (kale was mentioned as purple sprouting broccoli and early spring cabbage should already be in place in September).
