After Storm ex Ophelia the winds blew protection fleeces and membranes all over the Go Local Fields as well as tipping over bean supports – it had to be the runner beans rather than the French beans which have finished as a crop anyway. That’s wind for you and our site is not exactly protected from the weather when the wind blows. Or the rain falls horizontally.
The associated rain meant that the pumpkins just had to be lifted, dried and put indoors to cure. They were definitely not turning a nice shade of yellow outside. Ian, our grower, was desperately looking for towels to dry them before he started picking when I spoke to him. Who knows what Storm Brian has done to the fields over the weekend. We shall report later.
Between times, a bed of spinach has been planted and half a bed of Spanish radishes. That will be in the poly tunnels of course. So there is still growing being done for the autumn and winter crop shares.
