Good weather a challenge for Farmers
“A County Down farmer has said he risks losing crops if the current dry spell continues into next week. Roy Lyttle operates a farm near Newtownards and says he can only access water for 10-15% of his crops.”
“It takes 23,000 gallons to make an inch of rainfall on one acre, if you were to multiply that you would be pumping day and night to do 15 or 20 acres.”
We don’t realise just what is involved in producing our vegetables – though the work shares at Go Local Food who are doing outside watering using the watering can may appreciate this farmer’s problems.
