The first week of October on the fields

Strawberry PatchGo Local Food is catching up the autumn work slowly and surely. Last weekend some of the Hand on the Field volunteers completed about twenty hanging baskets filled with strawberry plants as the preparation goes on to clear the old strawberry bed.

Butternut squashes are being lifted and stored – the recent high winds have made this essential. Onions are nearly all lifted and stored for the winter – just one more bed to go. Beds are being prepared for the planting of winter garlic and onions.

Poly tunnels are being cleared – the cucumber house awaits its winter wash against the red spider mite and the pepper tubs are going to the tomato tunnel to allow digging over to be done underneath them. Work continues on the building of the small poly tunnel.
