Growing update in the third week of October

pumpkins 2016The Go Local Food work shares have pulled out the frosted pumpkin plants now that all the goodies have been harvested and stored indoors. All the tomato plants are also due to be cleared from the poly tunnels this week so that space can be prepared for autumn and winter crops. So no more chance of chutney ingredients in the crop share this year.

Late sowings of kale, chard and oriental greens are being done. These will go into a cool but frost free space to grow on and be planted out in the new year. That should be the last of the sowing of seeds for 2018 unless space is found in the poly tunnels for some late lettuces.

Ian our grower was caught sitting in the sun outside sewing last Wednesday – yes that sort of sewing. He was mending the edges of the anti pest netting where it was getting almost too tatty to use.
